Stories from Strangers

We’ll have a new question here every month for you to answer and engage with. Think of this as an online journal, except everyone gets a page in the book, and no one knows who’s written what (fun!).

Pour your heart out or read through the pages of someone else’s heart. Either way, we hope you find comfort in reading these stories from strangers.

What is your happiest memory of your mother or a maternal figure?

Saturday mornings going shopping with my mom to Durban’s West street. Standing in line at the Pick n Mix counter for sweets and then having lunch upstairs at the cafe in the Garlicks store…or maybe it was Stuttafords. I remember the green plants in the cafe and the feeling of being so grown up being allowed to eat there amongst the ladies.

As someone that hardly spends quality time with my Mom, Baking with her always fills up every empty part of my life. Seeing her proud of our teamwork and having to do something she loves with her as a normally detached child completes the both of us in ways l could never explain.

When my mom was bed ridden with cancer, I once asked her, what will I do when she is gone and I miss her so much. She said: ” You go and stand in front of the mirror, look yourself in the eye and know that a part of me is within you and always will be with you wherever you go. That will be your strength.”

My mom had financial problems when I was growing up but we never went to bed without food. This one time we were walking together, I was from school and she was from work. She said “I love you so much because you understand what’s going on and you still don’t put any pressure on me. I appreciate that most about you. You are a good child” I still remember that day vividly. I fellt seen and appreciated❤️

One of them (too many to count), was freezing our butts off in Paris, while eating the most delicious, warm, croque monsieur that we got from a random food stall next to the river. All of this staring at the Eiffle Tower. ✨️

When I was depressed at Uni, living far from home. I phoned my mom crying and she took off from work and drove all the way to my uni. She helped me clean my flat, cook food and gave me a hug. She forgot her jacket there and it still smelled like her for months, so I wore it when I felt lonely and depressed.
